Now that I am situated in my new home, I reached out to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Alabama organization. The BBBS in Columbus was a very important part of my life but I took a really long break for Grad School and when I was laid off (because I didn't know if I would be moving for a job -- which I ultimately did). The BBBS of N.AL have invited me to an orientation meeting, after which I assume they will background-check me and then wait to find the right Little Sister with whom I can be matched. I hope they have monthly activities planned, as they did in Columbus because it's a great way to acquaint yourself with a new city. Of course, the best part of being a mentor is establishing a relationship with a young person and reaping all the positive aspects of that. It's a wonderful way to spend your free time, especially if you have no kids of your own, as is my case.
